There is no sugarcoating it: this was a weekend Georgia Tech fans will want to forget. Football got run over at home, volleyball dropped a winnable match, and the message boards have been busy ever since.
Football: Boston College Rolls 49-27
Tech jumped out to a 10-0 lead on a Kevin Roche, Jr. touchdown catch and an Aidan Birr field goal, then was outscored 49-17 the rest of the way in a 49-27 loss to Boston College. The Eagles piled up 399 rushing yards at 8.5 per carry and scored on seven of nine real drives after the 3:18 mark of the first quarter. Alberto Mendoza threw two interceptions, both to Charlie Comella, the second returned 53 yards for a pick six that put the game away. Justice Haynes had a 15-yard touchdown run and Grady Adamson came on late to hit Dalen Penson for 30 yards, but late-down execution was brutal, with only three successful late-down plays all afternoon. Tech falls to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the ACC, and Brent Key noted afterward that Boston College beat the Jackets 14 times on the same run play. Injuries are a real factor, with 16 players out coming in, but the run defense has been out of position since game one.
Volleyball: Swept by No. 7 SMU
Tech volleyball closed an 0-3 athletics weekend with a 3-0 sweep at the hands of No. 7 SMU (26-24, 26-24, 25-21) at McCamish Pavilion. The Jackets were right there in the first two sets, tying each at 24, but SMU out-hit them .264 to .155 and closed when it mattered. Zoe Humphrey was a wall at the net with seven blocks, including three in a five-point stretch in the second set, and Dallas native Simone Heard came off the bench for the first two aces of her career plus three kills. Alida Bennour kept Tech in rallies all night. The Jackets sit at 13-7 and 5-4 in ACC play, eighth in the conference, with road trips to Notre Dame and No. 3 Louisville ahead. Stealing the Louisville match would be the kind of win that locks up an NCAA Tournament resume.
What Fans Are Talking About
The GTSwarm boards are, predictably, on fire. The ACCOUNTABILITY ?? thread is where the postgame frustration is pooling, while the 24 team playoff thread debates where the postseason is headed. Elsewhere, fans tracked the rest of the slate in Other games 10/23 and Other games Oct 17th, and there is an ongoing campaign about the music at Bobby Dodd during the game.
For a palate cleanser, the Beautiful plays thread is still collecting the good stuff, and the MLB Postseason Thread is keeping people occupied between kickoffs. With hoops season closing in fast, GT Hoops General Topics is picking up steam, and McCamish may be the best place to point your optimism right now.
