Happy Thursday, Jackets fans. Saturday night’s trip to Stanford is shaping up as the most consequential game of the young season, and the fan base is right in the middle of that familiar September mix of frustration, hope, and late-night kickoff dread. Here is everything worth reading from September 24, 2026.

Scouting the Cardinal: Things I Think I Know

From the Rumble Seat’s weekly preview of the Stanford matchup is essential reading this week, and it does not pull punches. The bottom line: given the talent on this roster, three games of sloppy football is hard to explain away. The offensive line has taken its biggest step back in years, special teams keeps producing head-scratchers (a blocked extra point against Mercer, then a bad snap on the very next one), and Tech has now been out-rushed three straight weeks. The Bears put up 188 yards on the ground at 4.1 a carry, and backup quarterback JP Pickles added 53 rushing yards himself after entering in the third quarter. Converting 2-of-11 on third down is not a trend that survives ACC play.

The good news is that Stanford has problems of its own, and arguably worse ones. The Cardinal are 0-2 in conference play, outscored 80-13 by Miami and Duke, averaging just 16.7 points and 334.7 yards per game under first-year head coach Tavita Pritchard. Their defense ranks 127th nationally, allowing 448 yards per game and 303 through the air, with opposing quarterbacks completing 67.6 percent of their throws – and Alberto Mendoza is sitting at 69 percent on the year. If the staff lets him sling it, there are yards available. Michigan transfer Davis Warren runs their offense with 675 yards and two touchdowns, and at minus-15 rushing yards on the season he is mercifully not the mobile quarterback this defense has struggled to contain.

Justice Haynes is the other reason for optimism. He looked like himself against Mercer: 141 yards on 22 carries with two touchdowns, plus two catches for 26 yards and a score. Stanford’s run defense sits 88th nationally and is respectable enough that the offensive line will have to show up for Haynes to break out again. This is a game Tech needs, with tougher ACC matchups still on the schedule, and it is the first trip to California since 2005.

What the Boards Are Saying

The mood on GTSwarm is, predictably, raw. One thread asks the blunt question head-on in “Rebuild”, weighing whether what we are watching is a bad stretch or something that requires a longer-horizon fix. A companion discussion, “Simply put. This team is broadly below average,” makes the case that the problems are not isolated to one unit – which tracks uncomfortably well with the tape through three games.

For a reminder that Tech and Stanford have history worth savoring, one poster took the long view in “Looking back 25 and 35 years ago: previous bowl battles with Stanford,” revisiting the postseason meetings between these programs. It is a good palate cleanser before Saturday night.

Elsewhere, the long-running Conference Realignment thread continues to track the shifting landscape that put Stanford on our schedule in the first place – this is the first time Tech has played any of the ACC’s 2024 additions (Cal, Stanford, SMU), and the Cardinal’s last unplayed conference opponent. And if you are still working out plans for the rest of the year, the 26-27 Tech Ticket Exchange is the place fans are buying, selling, and swapping seats.

The Bottom Line

Clean football, protect Mendoza, feed Haynes, and find a pulse against the run – do those things and the last three weeks stop looking like a verdict on the season. Do not, and the concerns get a lot harder to wave off. Late kickoff, long flight, and a very real chance to start 1-0 in the ACC.
