September 2026 has been a landmark month for Georgia Tech, with the Institute earning multiple national honors while also opening a major new facility at the heart of its campus.
Georgia Tech Climbs the Rankings
Georgia Tech’s academic momentum was on full display in this month’s wave of national rankings. The Institute has risen to No. 6 among public universities in the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges 2027 rankings, entering the nation’s top 30 universities overall. The rankings recognized top placements in engineering and computing disciplines, as well as significant gains in academic quality and value.
Separately, Georgia Tech retained its No. 1 ranking on the Princeton Review’s list of the Top 50 Best Value Colleges (Public Schools) for the fourth consecutive year — a measure of universities’ return on investment. The Institute also climbed to No. 3 in the nation in the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) 2027 College Free Speech Rankings, retaining its Green Light designation for policies that support open dialogue on campus.
New Academic Towers Open at Tech Square
George Tower | Scheller Tower officially opened in the heart of Tech Square, creating a new shared environment for industrial engineering and business students, faculty, and researchers. Supported by state funding and philanthropic investments, the facility is designed to foster interdisciplinary learning and collaboration across two of Georgia Tech’s most prominent colleges.
Entrepreneurship Hits New Records
In his September newsletter, Provost Raheem Beyah reflected on a recent visit to Silicon Valley — home to one of Georgia Tech’s largest alumni communities — where he and other Institute leaders met with graduates working at Google, AMD, Amazon Labs, and NVIDIA. The Provost highlighted a record year for campus entrepreneurship: last year alone, Georgia Tech innovators launched 179 startups and reported more than 500 new inventions. This year, CREATE-X and Quadrant-i helped Georgia Tech surpass 200 startup teams for the first time, marking a new milestone for the Institute’s entrepreneurship ecosystem.
AI in Education and Research
Faculty across the College of Lifetime Learning and the College of Sciences are exploring new approaches to teaching with artificial intelligence. Highlighted in Georgia Tech’s new Academic AI Playbook, one project uses AI-facilitated Socratic dialogue to deepen student thinking in large classes, while another uses AI to generate clinical scenarios and vocabulary exercises for healthcare communication courses. Beginning October 8, the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts is launching its AI & Society speaker series, bringing experts from academia and industry together to explore the human implications of AI through February 2027.
Research Spotlight: Disasters and Displacement
A Georgia Tech-led study found that natural disasters can drive long-term rent increases, potentially displacing residents and reshaping communities for years after recovery efforts begin — a finding with significant implications for housing policy and disaster preparedness. Separately, faculty from the Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering published research examining the engineering challenges of interstellar spaceflight, offering a scientific perspective on what it would take for any civilization to cross the vast distances between stars.
