Buckle up, Jackets fans — this one is not easy reading. Georgia Tech heads to Pittsburgh on Halloween weekend looking for answers after a chaotic loss to Boston College, and the message boards are every bit as restless as you would expect.
Things I Think I Know: Pitt Week
From The Rumble Seat’s weekly column does not sugarcoat it, calling the Boston College game arguably the worst showing of Brent Key’s tenure and a train wreck unfolding in slow motion. Pitt arrives wounded too: the Panthers opened 5-0 with a signature win in Blacksburg before quarterback Mason Heintschel tore his ACL, and they have since dropped three straight, including a 29-point loss to top-ranked Miami. Pitt has shuffled between freshman Corey Dailey (44.3 QBR) and senior Holden Geriner (40.4 QBR), leaning on receiver Cataurus Hicks (649 yards, 20.9 per catch) and freshman running back Damon Ferguson Jr. (477 yards). The problem for Tech is the other side of the ball: Pitt’s run defense is surrendering just 65 yards per game, which could leave the offense riding Mendoza’s arm. Meanwhile Tech’s defense now sits 117th nationally in total defense at 407.6 yards allowed per game, 131st against the run, and gave up nearly 400 rushing yards and 49 points to BC. The bright spots: receivers Dalen Penson and Jordan Allen keep producing, ironically at the position fans worried most about in the offseason. Read the full column.
