It’s a tale of two seasons on the Flats right now. Volleyball is humming, cross country is hosting, and the #ProJackets are gearing up for NFL Week 4 – while football sits in an early bye week with a fan base doing a lot of soul-searching. Here’s everything from Thursday, October 1, 2026.
Volleyball Takes On Duke and No. 25 North Carolina
The Jackets head to North Carolina this weekend for the next step of ACC play, facing Duke and then No. 25 North Carolina. It’s the toughest test yet for a team that has looked legitimately dangerous in the early going. Get the full match preview from RamblinWreck.com.
If you haven’t been paying attention to this team, now is the time. From The Rumble Seat’s Tyler Rover broke down a dominant ACC-opening weekend in which Tech swept both Virginia and Virginia Tech in straight sets. The Jackets are 6-0 at home in six sold-out contests, having won 18 of 20 sets. Against Virginia Tech, a 15-1 first-set run powered by blocks from Zoe Humphrey, Magda Kobaidze, and Alida Bennour set the tone, and Laura Perugini Bieleski closed out the sweep with a trio of kills in a tight third set. Against Virginia, Bennour piled up 21 kills – the most by a single Jacket in a three-set match since 2022 – while Heloise Soares assisted on 35 of the team’s 43 kills. Read the full recap.
Cross Country Hosts the Georgia Tech XC Invitational
The Jackets are set to host their home invitational, running from Douglasville. It’s a chance to see the program on its own turf before the championship portion of the schedule arrives. Details on the Georgia Tech XC Invitational.

Football: Bye-Week Reckoning
From The Rumble Seat’s bye-week “Things I Think I Know” column does not pull punches, and it captures where a lot of the fan base is after the Stanford loss. The verdict: it’s time to panic. The Jackets are 1-6 over their last seven games, with the last FBS win a nailbiter over Boston College, and the author sees echoes of the 2015 collapse – a great season followed by the loss of an anchor on the offensive line (Shaq Mason then, Keylan Rutledge now), then a pile of injuries. Eighteen players landed on the injury report last week, eight of them starters, though the column argues injuries explain only part of a rough start. The bright spot is unmistakable: kicker Aidan Birr broke Georgia Tech’s career field goal record, finishing the night at 63, and already holds school records for single-season field goals made (25), kicking and total points in a season (120), and career field goal percentage (80.8%). The piece closes with a plea worth repeating – wanting change and supporting the team are not mutually exclusive. Read the full column.
