Thursday, October 8, 2026 brought one of the biggest research and economic development announcements in recent Georgia Tech history, along with an invitation for the whole campus community to mark the end of an era. Here is your daily digest of Georgia Tech academics and research news.

Georgia Tech and Emory Commit More Than $1 Billion to AI

Georgia Tech and Emory University announced a combined investment of more than $1 billion in artificial intelligence, positioning Atlanta as one of the nation’s most robust AI ecosystems. The commitment breaks down to more than $575 million from Georgia Tech and approximately $600 million from Emory, and it is designed to strengthen the region’s competitiveness for business growth, skilled workers, private investment, and federal research funding. Georgia Tech’s share focuses on advanced computing, AI discovery, and workforce development, while Emory’s cultivates AI talent and applications across healthcare, medicine, business, law, the humanities, and ethics. “Georgia is poised to be a national leader in advanced, responsible AI development that can be counted on to produce the talent, infrastructure, and innovation companies need,” said Georgia Tech President Ángel Cabrera. The investment spans four pillars that companies say they need most:

  • Computing power: advanced computing infrastructure in Tech Square, a campuswide computing platform, and Nexus, a new AI supercomputer launching this month with joint funding from Georgia Tech, industry, and the National Science Foundation.
  • Talent: the AI Makerspace gives more than 6,000 students each year hands-on AI experience, while nearly half of Emory’s investment has gone toward recruiting and retaining AI experts in Atlanta.
  • Research expertise: Georgia Tech’s AI work reaches across computing, engineering, science, business, design, and the liberal arts, including multiple NSF AI Institutes in energy, supply chains, healthcare, aging, and education. Emory’s AI.Humanity initiative brings together more than 250 faculty across eight schools and colleges.
  • Real-world applications: Tech AI connects companies and government partners with leading researchers, while Emory’s AI.Health institute has already contributed to three spinoff companies and 40 licensed technologies.

The impact is meant to reach well beyond the two campuses. Georgia Tech’s College of Lifetime Learning is building new approaches to upskilling and reskilling workers, the Institute leads Georgia AIM—a statewide AI manufacturing initiative backed by nearly $100 million in federal, state, and private support—and Georgia Tech recently joined Foundry School, a national effort to prepare engineers, technicians, and entrepreneurs for advanced manufacturing. Taken together with the Atlanta Mayor’s Office goal of making the city a top-five technology hub, these investments aim squarely at establishing Atlanta as a national center of excellence for applied AI.

Ramblin’ On: Miles of Memories

On a decidedly more personal note, the entire campus community is invited to celebrate the Cabrera era with Ramblin’ On: Miles of Memories, a party and group bike ride around campus on Tuesday, October 20. The celebration on the Instructional Center Lawn begins at 3:30 p.m., the ride rolls out at 4:30 p.m., and the event wraps at 5:30 p.m. Attendees can register their participation and share a message with the president as he rambles on to his next adventure. Free food and freebies are part of the deal, and alumni, faculty, staff, postdocs, and students are all welcome.

The Takeaway

It is a fitting pair of stories: an institution making a generational bet on the technology that will define the next few decades, and a campus pausing to thank the leader who helped set that course.
