A Record-Breaking Moment for Georgia Tech Innovation
Georgia Tech has reached a landmark milestone in its commitment to fostering entrepreneurship and innovation. For the first time in its history, the Startup Launch program surpassed 200 startup teams, representing the largest cohort ever supported by the Institute’s robust commercialization ecosystem. This achievement reflects the growing momentum behind Georgia Tech’s vision to become the nation’s leading startup campus—a vision that transforms bold ideas into real-world solutions.
The milestone was driven by CREATE-X and Quadrant-i, two cornerstone initiatives of the Office of Commercialization, which support students, faculty, researchers, and alumni in launching ventures across diverse industries including healthcare, robotics, legal technology, and accessibility.
Stories of Innovation: From Mexico to Atlanta
Behind this impressive number are compelling human stories. Consider Alberto Flores Guerrero, who earned his M.S. in cybersecurity from the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts in 2025, and his co-founder Luis Estala. The pair learned about CREATE-X Startup Launch just two weeks before its kickoff—and were so committed to the opportunity that they drove nearly 2,000 miles from Mexico to Atlanta to attend. Their venture, Separate, is an AI-powered platform designed to help people navigate divorce by simplifying legal processes and connecting users with resources. For both founders, the experience did more than provide resources; it built their confidence and gave them a community of like-minded innovators. “This experience has completely changed the way we think about ourselves and what’s possible for our company,” Estala reflected.
Engineering Ideas Into Market-Ready Products
Other startups emerging from Georgia Tech exemplify the pivot-and-learn approach that characterizes successful entrepreneurship. Georgia Tech master’s student Rohit Gore and co-founder Patrick Walsh initially set out to develop low-cost drones, but through customer conversations, they discovered a more pressing challenge: the simulation-to-reality gap that plagues autonomous systems development. Their new startup, Brio Robotics, is now developing simulation and automated testing platforms for robotics companies. With guidance from CREATE-X Startup Launch Director Margaret Weniger, the team learned the fundamentals of B2B sales and customer discovery—invaluable knowledge for engineers-turned-entrepreneurs. Today, Brio Robotics is finalizing its first design partnership and has five additional robotics companies in its pipeline.
From Lab to Marketplace: Faculty-Led Innovation
Not all Georgia Tech startups begin with students. Some emerge directly from the Institute’s world-class research laboratories. Associate Professor Yue Chen of the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering, working with Ph.D. students Yixuan Xia, Yilin Cai, and Samuel Wilcox, launched Fructus, a company developing robotic harvesting technology. What began as a USDA-funded blackberry harvesting project evolved into an opportunity targeting Georgia’s blueberry industry—a pivot informed by customer discovery through Quadrant-i Startup Launch. “There’s a gap between the work we do in the lab and the final product,” Chen explained. “Startup Launch helped bridge that gap through customer discovery.” For researcher Yilin Cai, the experience was transformative: “We learned to see the problem from the customer’s perspective and think about what it really takes to build a product.”

Georgia Tech’s entrepreneurial energy will be on full display at CREATE-X Demo Day on Thursday, September 3, when more than 150 startups will showcase their ventures at LOOP, Georgia Tech’s newest creative arts and performance venue.
