Football: Things I Think I Know — Duke
From the Rumble Seat is back with its weekly breakdown, and this one is a sobering read. Duke arrives at Bobby Dodd at 4-0 with an eight-game win streak—tied for the fourth-longest active streak in the country—and a chance to match a program record that dates back to 1941. Both teams are coming off a bye, so neither side has a rest advantage. The numbers behind Tech’s start are rough: the run defense ranks 123rd nationally, the run offense 109th, total defense 96th, and total offense 91st. Alberto Mendoza has already been sacked 10 times in four games, more than all of last season, and Justice Haynes is averaging 98 yards per game after averaging 134.3 through four games at Michigan a year ago. Coach Key described the Stanford outing as looking like “11 independent contractors” on the field and said he wanted to use the bye not just to improve but to rebuild.
The matchup concern is obvious. Duke sophomore running back Nate Sheppard has 91 carries for 644 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 161 yards per game, and the Blue Devils rank 12th nationally at 243.5 rushing yards per game. Quarterback Walker Eget, a San Jose State graduate transfer, has been sacked just once all year—second-best in the nation—which says plenty about Duke’s offensive line. Meanwhile, Tech’s secondary gave up 396 passing yards to Stanford, the most the Cardinal have managed against a Power Four opponent in seven years. The full breakdown is worth your time at From the Rumble Seat.
