Georgia Tech Academics Roundup — August 31, 2026

Georgia Tech welcomed its largest and most diverse incoming class in recent memory as the Fall 2026 semester got underway. President Angel Cabrera, in his monthly newsletter, reported that 4,180 first-year students along with approximately 1,000 transfers have joined the Institute, hailing from 121 Georgia counties, 49 states, and 78 nations worldwide. A New Student Convocation was held at McCamish Pavilion, where both Cabrera and Provost Raheem Beyah delivered a message of encouragement to new students: “You belong here, and you will thrive here.”

The semester also brings new facilities for students to enjoy. The Bud and Val Peterson Residence Hall, named after Georgia Tech’s 11th president and first lady, opened along Northside Drive with 860 beds — the first traditional residence hall built on campus since 1969. Brittain Dining Hall also welcomed students back after a two-year renovation that modernized the kitchen and service areas while preserving the building’s vaulted ceiling, stained-glass windows, and terrazzo floors.

On the national rankings front, the Princeton Review ranked Georgia Tech the No. 1 best-value public university in the nation. The Institute also generated $6.3 billion in economic impact for Georgia in FY2025, an 8.8% increase over the prior year and more than 25% of the University System of Georgia’s total economic impact. In research, biomedical engineer and Carl Ring Family Professor Ankur Singh developed a method to rejuvenate aging immune cells to better fight cancer, infection, and other diseases. Georgia Tech’s CREATE-X and Quadrant-i Startup Launch program surpassed 200 teams for the first time — its largest cohort ever — and the Institute will lead a new National Cloud Laboratory for Advanced Manufacturing.

Provost Beyah’s August newsletter highlighted several institutional developments. Georgia Tech unveiled a new Academic AI Strategy and Academic AI Playbook supporting faculty-led innovation, student AI fluency, and the practical integration of AI into teaching and learning. Angus Wilkinson (School of Chemistry & Biochemistry / Materials Science & Engineering) was elected chair of the Faculty Executive Board, and Heidi Boisvert — an interdisciplinary artist and creative technologist with a background spanning immersive media, AI, and design — was named chair of the School of Arts, Entertainment, and Creative Technologies.

In personnel news, Karin Elliott was named Interim Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer effective September 1, and Mario Herane was appointed as chief catalyst for content and product strategy at the College of Lifetime Learning, tasked with expanding academic and noncredit offerings and developing an AI-enabled learning ecosystem. School of Computer Science Assistant Professor Ahmed Saeed received an NSF CAREER Award to advance research on improving data center efficiency, including server utilization and energy consumption. And Amie Raines, program and operations manager for the John H. Martinson Honors Program, was recognized as the inaugural recipient of the Steven W. McLaughlin Bridge Builder Award from the Provost’s Employee Engagement and Culture Council.
