It was a rough Tuesday on The Flats. Four games into the season, the mood around Georgia Tech football has soured after a 34-27 loss at Stanford, and the message boards were busy. There was good news elsewhere — golf, volleyball — but let’s start where everyone’s attention is.
Football: Panic Mode
From The Rumble Seat’s Tuesday Thoughts 9/29: Panic Mode opens with a single word: “Yuck.” The three-sentence recap is brutal in its clarity — a 10-point halftime lead erased in a third quarter where Tech ran just eight plays for 21 yards, a late Mendoza interception deep in Stanford territory that killed the comeback, and a run defense that finally showed up only for the pass defense to surrender nearly 400 yards through the air. The column’s assessment is that this is past the point of tweaks: “every aspect of what we’re doing feels so fundamentally flawed.” There were bright spots worth naming — Trelain Maddox made a real impact in the run game and caught a touchdown, and Rahkeem Smith continues to be dangerous on kick returns (get him the ball on offense, please). Up next is a bye week that could not arrive at a better time, with Duke on 10/10 on the other side.
The Scions E331: Trees 34, Bees 27. Questions: Many podcast covers similar ground — Jake, Jack, and Akshay break down the demoralizing loss, what four games have revealed about this team, and why the trajectory is worrying. They also check in on the volleyball program, which opened ACC play with a strong 2-0 weekend and has North Carolina and Pitt looming.
Golf: A Hole-in-One at the Ben Hogan
The Jackets sit tied for 11th at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational, with the day’s highlight belonging to Carson Baez, who fired a hole-in-one. Not a bad way to sign your scorecard.
Around the Message Boards
GTSwarm was as active as you’d expect after a loss like that. A sampling of where the conversation went:
- Stanford Post Game — the immediate reaction thread.
- Thoughts after the 1st Quarter (of the season) — taking stock at the four-game mark.
- Should Key Go? (Poll) — the question nobody wanted to be asking in September.
- Godsey and Should Godsey Be In The Box? — two threads on the offensive coordinator and where he should be calling plays from.
- 2026 Over Under — revisiting preseason win totals with fresh eyes.
- Watching 4 future conference opponents today — scouting notes from around the league.
- Beautiful plays — a reminder that the highlight reel still exists.
- Found Geoff Collins’ burner account — because the board still has a sense of humor.
Looking Ahead
The bye week is here, and it’s hard to imagine a group that needed one more. Volleyball carries the good vibes forward into a tough ACC stretch, golf wraps up at the Ben Hogan, and football gets two weeks to find something before Duke on October 10.
Where do you land on all of this — is the bye week a reset or just a pause? Sound off in the comments and let us know what you’re watching for when the Jackets come back out.
