Happy Friday, Jackets. Today’s academic and research roundup is heavy on the practical: hands-on instrumentation training, scholarly-impact tools, and a run of Office of International Education sessions that international and study-abroad students will want on their calendars. Here’s what posted on the Institute calendar on Friday, September 25, 2026.

Research and Core Facilities

The Parker H. Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience and the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering are hosting an IBB Core Facilities Educational Workshop on Wednesday, September 30 from noon to 3 p.m. in the Engineered Biosystems Building, Room 5029. Carson Cameron, a field application scientist with Sartorius, will lead an introduction to Bio-Layer Interferometry, walking attendees through how to set up a kinetics or quantitation assay, followed by a round-table discussion on how the technique maps onto attendees’ own workflows. Registration is required and lunch is provided — a good deal for three hours of instrument time with an application scientist in the room. The same session is cross-listed on the Training and Workshops calendar, so grab whichever listing you find first.

Library Workshops: Measuring and Managing Your Scholarship

The Georgia Tech Library is running its Research Impact Tools & Metrics workshop online on Tuesday, October 20 from 4 to 5 p.m. It is aimed squarely at graduate students and early-career researchers who want a working toolkit of indicators: how to find credible journals in your field, which library databases carry journal impact measures, how to trace and count citations, how to manage your scholarly identity and visibility, and where the open-access publishing options sit. If you have ever been asked to document the reach of your work and weren’t sure where to start, this is the hour that fixes it.

The Library follows it the next day with an EndNote workshop, online Wednesday, October 21 from 4 to 5 p.m. EndNote is available to the Georgia Tech community as part of the Technology Fee, and no prior experience is required. By the end of the session you should be able to pull references in from databases and online sources, manage references and PDFs inside EndNote, and use Cite While You Write to drop citations straight into Word. Two afternoons back to back and your citation workflow is in far better shape than it was.

Office of International Education

International Student and Scholar Services and the Office of International Education are hosting a J-1 Student Academic Training Webinar on Thursday, October 8 from 11 a.m. to noon, held virtually. The session covers options, requirements, and next steps for J-1 students pursuing Academic Training, with the OIE advising team on hand for questions. It appears on both the Career & Professional Development and Training and Workshops calendars — same webinar, two listings.

Looking further out, OIE will hold an Exchange Student Pre-Arrival Webinar for Spring 2027 incoming exchange students on Wednesday, November 4 from 9 to 10 a.m., virtually. It’s the standard pre-arrival briefing on what to sort out before your exchange program at Georgia Tech begins, and RSVP is requested. Worth forwarding to anyone you know arriving on campus in January.

Also refreshed on the calendar Friday: the Gilman Scholarship Workshop listing from Education Abroad. The Gilman International Scholarship works to broaden who studies abroad and where they go by funding U.S. undergraduates who might otherwise be priced out; applicants must be Federal Pell Grant recipients to be eligible. OIE’s workshop covers how the program works, how to build a competitive application, and offers feedback on drafts. Check the Gilman website or email education.abroad@oie.gatech.edu for current dates and deadlines, as the calendar entry carries an older event date.

The Takeaway

Nothing flashy today, but a genuinely useful slate: one instrumentation workshop with real assay setup, two Library sessions that pay for themselves the next time you write a grant or a paper, and a set of OIE briefings with hard dates attached. Which of these are you signing up for? Drop a comment and let us know — and if you attend the Bio-Layer Interferometry workshop, tell us whether it was worth the walk to EBB. Go Jackets!
